'Barefoot' Health Workers Project

Short description:

Butetown and Grangetown are two of the most deprived council wards in Cardiff with residents experiencing some of the poorest health as a consequence of the combination of poor socio-economic circumstances, unhealthy lifestyles and low uptake of health services (for example, breast screening). The community has a diverse cultural mix with a large percentage of the population from BME groups. The aim of the project is to significantly improve the health of socially disadvantaged and excluded social and ethnic groups in Butetown and Grangetown. The Project objectives are:
  • to undertake research into community health needs;
  • to identify cultural and social appropriate ways of addressing identified health needs;
  • to support, foster and encourage community involvement in developing, delivering and accessing culturally and socially appropriate activities.
Since February 2001, contact has been made with Yemeni and Somali and Bangladeshi communities in Butetown and Grangetown. Members of these communities have participated in activities that have been identified and developed through the action research process. The 'Barefoot' Project was extended in 2002 with the appointment of an African-Caribbean and a Pakistani Community Researchers. They will also be developing activities with their communities in Butetown, Grangetown and south Cardiff. The project involves partnership working with other groups, organisations and agencies in order to improve access to health service provision, and to develop health related activities on a long-term basis. It is an integral part of the Butetown/Grangetown Healthy Living Programme, which was developed out of the consultation process undertaken by the Butetown/ Grangetown Regeneration Forum.

Patients with common mental health problems such as anxiety or depression will soon be able to get help at their GP surgeries. Trained counsellors will be available at all 57 GP surgeries across the City for those experiencing mild or moderate mental health problems rather than being referred elsewhere. This follows the success of a pilot scheme in seven practices in eastern Cardiff, which was well received by those seeking help and their GPs.

The counselling service is provided by the Department of Clinical Psychology of Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust. Overall, 33 counsellors will be employed, either on a full time or part time basis. They all have high standards of qualifications and are either accredited with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy or have equivalent qualifications. The implementation of counselling sessions in all surgeries will be completed by January 2003. In addition to the services introduced in seven practices in east Cardiff, the phased roll out commenced in west Cardiff in April 2002. The next phase will be in north Cardiff followed by the central area and finally the south east in January 2003.
