The month of July was spent consulting with members of the steering group, developing the administrative infrastructure, and branding as well as raising the profile of the project. I also spent time developing the project plan and identifying modules or areas of activity (each of which has been identified in this report by an asterisk*).

  • Letters of introduction sent to Steering Group Members, Partners & Advisory Members, Funders and Assembly Members

*Profiling Black and Minority Ethnic Groups in Cardiff

The need to promote the health need of Black and Minority Ethnic people in Cardiff lies at the heart of this project and gathering, collating, and documenting information about the groups we target is fundamental to the success of this project and a core area of activity.

Meetings held in July 2002

  • Owen Jenkins and Sion Ward - Cardiff Research Centre (Cardiff Council Department responsible for collection, analysis and interpretation of statistical data, including the census, as well as related research and forecasting)
  • Akli Ahmed - Expert on Somali community (researcher for the 'Barefoot' Health Workers Project
  • Steve Kaireh - The Buzz Café (Information centre in Grangetown)
  • Pat Gregory
  • Alan Herbert

*Equity: Assessing mental health and social care needs

One of the key aims in this module during this first phase of the project (June - October 2002) is to profile existing mental health and social care services. In July I met with people engaged in mental health and social care provision to (1) introduce the project ; (2) learn about the key areas of responsibility ; and (3) tease out what they consider to be important issues in the two areas of provision.

Social Care, Health & Mental Health
1. Tony Hendrickson - Black Voluntary Sector Network
2. Tim Bennett - Community Mental Health Team (sg)
3. Bronwen Bermingham - Manager - 'Barefoot' Health Workers Project (sg)
4. Neeta Baicher - Neville Street Project
5. Martyn Jenkins - Cardiff Community Health Council
6. Akli Ahmed - Researcher for the Somali community - 'Barefoot' Health Workers Project
7. Judy Noble - Family and Community Care (postponed to September)

  • Black Voluntary Sector Network
  • Neville Street Project (previously the Multicultural Resource Centre)

*Empowerment, promotion & outreach

  • Began to organise event for Black History Month (more information will be given at team meeting 6 August 2002)
  • Established a listserv: the aim of the listserv will be to disseminate information and provide an electronic framework for a flow of information from other projects related to our work. The p name of the listserv (following jiscmail conventions: BME-WALES-HEALTH - SOCIAL CARE. Established 29 July, there are now 22 members!
  • Met with staff of non-statutory organisations to introduce the project and find ways to create a meaningful exchange of information. These organisations provide an important access points to residents and are of great potential re. promoting mental health and social care as related to the aims of the project (as well as generally); hosting focus groups to gauge perceptions of illness, usefulness of existing services and issues in need of attention.

*Effectiveness: Establishing Monitoring frameworks
